Culture Arts and Enhancing Community Development
There are some things in life that at times are elusive to humans. For a moment we fail to recognize and show the necessary respect for the less privileged in the society or the minority groups in our culture and communities… They seem to be distant from us. We tend to have stereotypes based on what we have heard about people without regard to their environs or circumstances. To really appreciate the substance people have we must as well know the context of their life.
I am one without the gift of faith
Although, I was as young as 7 my parents used to take me to a local theater to watch plays or musical performances. Not much about it made sense to me. I didn’t understand why I had to walk to a boring theater just to watch a play; while I could stay at home and watch my favorite cartoon channel or played video games. Of course it would be boring for me to stay home all by myself for hours; sounds kind of creepy. They usually insisted and most of the time I had no choice over theirs.
But all made sense on day. I was in my young adulthood while still in college when our class organized a visit to Arts Institute of Chicago. The experience there was amazing. The more I learnt about the diversity of people’s culture at the place, the more I found myself preparing to accept others. I began to realize that we are all the same as well as to live in peace and harmony; there is need to appreciate the diversity of culture; as well as the differences social classes of humans.
Arts and Culture can help in Appreciating Diversity of Human Beings
From the studies that day at the museum and subsequent visit to other cultural events as well as repositories I started to develop an intrinsic understanding of why people from different culture behave in a different manner or belong to different religion. The better understanding I got about them, the more I became aware of the need to appreciate diversity.
Therefore after graduating from college, I decided to volunteer at a mission school for blind kids. There wasn’t much that I could do there. But by staying with the kids as well as helping them in a way or the others, I became more aware of their needs. I also need to state that the school had children from different backgrounds and cultures. By interacting with them, I realized the need to stand with other in the community.

Working together to Foster Developments
By understanding the plight of the kids in the school, I realized the need of community cohesion and the need to socialize with each other so as to enable them feel part of the community and not isolated.
Since I realized that it was my duty to take part in community cohesion, I began taking more part in community activities as well as encouraging other to participate especially through cultural festivals.
I never realized that through my various volunteer activities I had become more influential until one day the mayor of the town called me. He wanted me to work with other chosen to prepare a cultural activity. Within no time, I was becoming an influential person in the society. As a matter of fact, I got involved in politics; so that I could be able to provide more help to the community. I got elected as the sub-county representative; and I believe that I will use my leadership position to help others appreciate the importance of diversity.
