Using Arts to Condemn Social Evils
We live in a world where there are many social issues which affects us. The world is a pervert place and many people today may are victims of social evils and injustices which are perpetrated by other human being. There is need to come out and condemn such acts afflicted by those who disregard the rights of others or those in power.
Different forms Arts have been used for ages as a tool of rebuking such evils. In such situations arts help in identifying what has gone wrong in the society and then used as a media to convey a message of repentance and the need to embrace social cohesion. For instance the use of narratives or poems have been used long enough to rebuke atrocities in the society through hidden messages within the prose of the narrative or poem.
They are presumed to be powerful because the manner through which a message is passed is different from how editors of mainstream media convey their resentments about what the wrongs in the society. One has to read between the lines to decipher the coded message and understand the intentions of the author.
Creative Ways to Promote Positive Agendas through Arts
Three years ago I was an environmental activist in a country where there was massive disregard of the environment; there was massive pollution of air and water while deforestation was rampant. I decided that I needed to come up with a creative solution which would pass my message to the concerned authorities about the need for a sustainable environment.
After careful thinking, I decided to enroll the use of arts in passing my message. Together with other activists we decided to create a countrywide campaign based on drama in passing out our message. We then sat down and came up with creative ideas in which we would stage our shows whereby we would be calling every concerned party to helping in conserving the environment and practice better ways of minimizing pollution.
Our preparations never came without hurdle since we needed reliable funds so that we could fund our mission. However after about six months of lobbying for funds from NGOs we managed to get enough funds to help us carry on with our objective.
We had various lines of our storylines and after getting the funds we went ahead without mission. We choreographed and recorded various shows which called for a stop in the degradation. It took a while before we found another sponsor who would help us distribute the various copies of the free CDs that we had created. That wasn’t enough though.
Expressing Need for Changes in an Unconventional Way
We needed to stage various shows in public places and we started by targeting various colleges and other public institutions where we could have our creative plays convey our message. At first it all seemed like we were never going to have our message passed across because six months after lobbying, there was little or no positive impacts.
However our breakthrough came about after a year. We had been invited by a local comedian to be part of his show recording. According to him, although he had watched our plays initially, he felt that they were more of comedy shows that purposed for education which explained his invitation.
However, this turned out to be a game changer. Among his audience present that day was an assistant minister of environment whom after performing our play felt that there was a deeper message in it. He expressed his concerns about the deep message that we had relayed in our drama and felt that there was need to come up with policies that would ensure a sustainable environment.
His sentiments were echoed by other guests who were given chance to address the audience. Within a week our theatrics became the talk of the town. People started to see the reality behind our motives and some organization started backing our mission. This led to intense lobbying for change and within a year and half, much had been done to ensure a clean and safer environment.
